I worked as a UI/UX Designer with Rexpand, a job referral app. My responsibilities included building a design system, creating over 200 high-fidelity mobile prototypes in 3-week sprints, conducting internal testing to improve usability, and optimizing functionality post-launch based on user feedback.

INTRODUCTION

Rexpand is a job referral app released in Aug 2022. The app aims to create a community for students in North America to expand professional networks and match the referral opportunities.

PROCESS

1. RESEARCH

Only 17% of international students have tried job referrals, compared to 47% of American students.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Although 95% of respondents acknowledged the importance of job referrals, the majority have not tried them due to a lack of connections and experience.

Most of the users are art students who come to conduct research and art enthusiasts seeking inspiration.

USER PERSONA

Google Analytics reveals that 63% of online collections visitors are aged between 18-34, and 72% are new users. A previous user survey also showed that most users are young individuals with broad interests but general expertise in the arts.

Considering their motivations and behaviors, we have identified two primary User Personas.

“We want to learn more about what people do on the collection page, what content they are most interested in, and whether they can find what they want.”

DESIGN GOAL

Initially, we held a kickoff meeting with the client to understand their needs and objectives. Then we consolidated previous research findings and gathered insights from our design team. Based on this, we identified the following three key research goals.

2. IDENTITY

Eye tracking helps us determine which contents get the most attention and what information users are actively searching for.

METHODS

We used the Tobii Pro eye tracker to record the participants’ eye movements and capture where they looked as they completed each task. Following each task, we employed a retrospective think-aloud method to gather their thoughts. This approach allowed us to gain deeper insights into their decision-making processes.

By evaluating featured artworks, we can specifically identify areas for improvement to better serve our primary users.

TASKS

Based on Google Analytics, 67% of users searched for artworks that ranked in the top 20 in popularity, with 34% specifically searching for "Van Gogh" as a keyword. Therefore, our testing primarily focuses on Van Gogh's artworks to better understand the users' actual experience.

A social network platform enables users to engage in networking by offering connecting features and adjustable privacy settings..

Allows job seekers and existing employees to view, accept, and manage referral requests with in-app notifications informing the process.

Enhance User Social Inclination

Due to the fact that the majority of users did not actively add friends, the friend list remained empty. Therefore, we use the form of "recommended for you" to make other users appear on the friend page, thus increasing users' desire to interact with each other.

Simplify the Sign-up Process

Sign-up

Users are more inclined to gradually fill in all the information under the guidance of a progress bar, rather than filling out a whole form on one page.Therefore, we split the entire form so that each page only has one input field.

Innovate the Anonymous Feature

After our investigation, we found that the main concern of employees for not posting internal referrals on public platforms is privacy. Although we hope this platform is mainly based on credible and authentic social networking, to meet the needs of our users, we have added an anonymous feature to ensure privacy.
